To the Rescue
Last night I got myself settled at home ready for a relaxing evening on my own. It was one of those very rare occasions when everyone was out.
I was about to put on a movie when I got a phone call. Matt had broken down and I had to meet him with a battery charger. Matt has a Series 3 Land Rover that is 50 years old and he was driving it to see some people.
It was about a 25 minute drive to get to him but on the journey back his electrics started to die too and eventually it just ran out of steam totally. We called our son and he came with a tow rope.
Fortunately I drive a new Land Rover Defender which has a tow bar so I had to tow him. This was a whole new experience for me. With Matt in the old Land Rover and our son following behind I slowly set off, feeling the weight of the vehicle behind me.
I was nervous. What if I braked too hard? What if I turned too sharply? We were holding up traffic behind us and I have never driven so slow or courteously in my life. We did get home eventually and it took me a good while to calm down my nerves afterwards.
In the end I felt a real sense of accomplishment. It wasn’t the peaceful evening I had planned, but it was a reminder that sometimes life throws unexpected challenges our way, not to frustrate us, but to show us what we’re capable of.
I never imagined I’d be the one towing a 50-year-old Land Rover through the dark country lanes, navigating traffic with my heart racing. But I did it. And now, if I ever have to do it again, I could (if I really had to!).
Life has a funny way of throwing unexpected detours our way, but sometimes, those moments can teach us a lot. It’s moments like these that make the best stories – the ones where things don’t go to plan, but you get through them anyway, even if it takes a strong cup of tea afterward to recover!.
I was happy it was me coming to the rescue for a change!
