Honouring
The Medal of Honour is the most prestigious medal to receive in the US. It was created during their Civil War and the Medal has been presented to roughly 3,500 recipients over the last 150 years for valour in combat.
Considering the amount of people in the world and the amount of medals given, few people get to receive a medal like this. Getting a Medal of Honour is hard but it also seems hard to get honour in general.
We have just had a party for my sister’s 50th birthday and many people came to celebrate with her. The night consisted of a lot of fun, food and laughter. There were also many speeches, all wanting to honour her – there wasn’t a dry eye in the house after.
One of my favourite days last year was when I took Matt away for the weekend also for his 50th birthday. Twenty friends turned up and surprised him. The weekend was so special and the most memorable part was on the Sunday over lunch. Someone gave a speech to honour Matt which resulted in almost everyone saying something to honour him. It was very impromptu but so special.
Even though it was Matt and Angela who were the people being honoured, it didn’t stop me feeling blessed and touched by the whole experience.
It’s something I feel I need to do more. It doesn’t have to be public like these were – sometimes one-to-one will do. It shouldn’t be hard or something that only a few people receive – we all do things worthy of praise and we need to step out more and give honour where it’s due
