Today is my eldest sons 17th birthday. He has been really looking forward to being 17 because all he has talked about for the last few years is the day he can learn to drive.
Me, though, I have been dreading it because in a few months when he has passed his test he will be off – no longer in need of us giving him lifts anymore. I am sure it will bring a whole load of other worries along with it.
If I think back though to when I was 17 I couldn’t wait to pass my test and have some independence.
If I knew then what I know now there wouldn’t be much I would change. I feel I have had a good life. I grew up in a loving family, I married a good man and I have got 4 amazing sons, even though sometimes they have their moments.
There is in fact only one thing I would change and that is what I ate. This year I feel like I have got those L plates on and I am learning all about nutrition, the effects that food does to your body, the health implications and a whole lot more.
I am now almost the same weight as I was at 17. I haven’t been in the 15 stone mark since I was a teenager. If I knew at 17 that I would be getting bigger and bigger for the next 20 years plus I definitely would have eaten more healthier sooner.
The good thing about me knowing it now though is that I can now pass on what I have learnt to my boys and teach them to live healthy lives and prevent them from going down the same unhealthy life I have lived for the past 20 odd years.
My boys are slowly changing and starting to prefer some of my food. However there is still a way to go, but it’s better late than never I say.
