Calling
I watched a film called Man Up starring Lake Bell and Simon Pegg. I love his movies because they always make me laugh. In this one Simon Pegg’s character goes on a blind date, meeting under the clock at Waterloo station.
They met and were having a great time when he found out that he accidentally met the wrong girl – she wasn’t his date! What followed was a funny series of events. Surprisingly, his intended date didn’t go as well.
The woman he mistakenly met went along with it because her family encouraged her to put herself out there rather than avoiding new opportunities.
At church today, we started a series titled ‘Not My Will but Yours.’ I believe in following my calling, but I’ve often worried about missing it? The preacher went on to say God’s will (our calling) is something we should aim for today.
There’s a saying: don’t put off till tomorrow what you can do today. While I may not know fully what my calling is, I’ve realised that doesn’t mean I can’t start striving for it now. Like Lake Bell’s character, stepping out in faith even without full clarity can still lead to something meaningful. She may not have been his date but that doesn’t mean she wasn’t his future.
Instead of waiting for perfect direction, I can trust that being faithful with what’s in front of me today is part of God’s greater plan even if it’s a different way than we intended.
