Back to the start

I would not call myself a technical person. I try and can get by most of the time but very often I need help from Matt.

A few days before Matt left my Mum flew out and joined us in Australia and today we went to the local shopping centre. We were to get a lift there and a Uber back.

My mum is definitely not a technical person either. So responsibility to get the Uber was mine. I know it sounds a simple thing to do but I have never done it before. Living out in the country you can’t get Ubers and if I’ve been in a city needing one there is usually someone else to do it for me.

I managed to work my way through the app with some ease and was really chuffed with myself that I booked it.

The trouble was, where we were going to be picking up was a 7 minute walk away. Navigating my way through the streets in a country I don’t live in with my mum in tow was a recipe for disaster.

But off we went – there I was trying to follow a line on my map walking the streets in the scorching heat. My mum definitely wasn’t Impressed and getting hotter with every step.

After about the 7th wrong turn and almost getting run over 3 times I finally managed to find the right direction. A 7 minute walk took 30 minutes. It was a good job I gave extra time to find the spot.

We stood on the spot for less than a minute when a car stopped and the driver asked “is your name Debbie?” I said with great relief “yes, that’s me”.

Getting in that car I felt immensely proud of myself – I had done it! But that pride was short lived as I looked out the window and I saw that we had basically walked around in circles and ended up in the exact same place we started from!!

Realising that I didn’t need to go through all that trouble and get all that grief just to end up back where we started was slightly annoying.

It made me realise something. Sometimes we put ourselves through things that cause unnecessary stress and anguish, going around in circles and end up where we started. When really, if we just stay put relax and wait, the solution can often drive  right up to you.
